In the Women’s T20 World Cup here at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Australia has narrowed out the shock exit door for India by just 9 runs with a thriller of a match.

Australia has earned a spot in the semi-final. While India’s aspirations of qualifying have now narrowed down to the way the other results turn out, their fate now hangs on the Pakistan-New Zealand match later today.

If New Zealand wins, India’s journey comes to an end. But if Pakistan wins, then qualification into the semi-final will come on their net run rate.

Australia, without skipper Alyssa Healy, who is still injured, won the toss on the Lord’s pitch yesterday and opted to bat in the match.

They did not help much with the early wickets, but Grace Harris (40 off 41 balls) and the team skipper Tahlia McGrath, who played some good shots and scored 32 off 26 balls, can take the team to a respectable 151/8 in 20 overs.

In the Indian bags, two wickets each were collected by Renuka Singh and Deepti Sharma, while Shreyanka Patil, Pooja Vastrakar, and Radha Yadav grabbed one wicket each.

Chasing 152, India managed only 47/3 after 6.5 overs when a strong stand between Harmanpreet Kaur, who aggregated 54 off 47 deliveries, and Deepti Sharma, who scored 29 off 25, gave some hope again.

But it proved insufficient as Australia’s tight bowling saw India collapse to 142/6 and thus lose by 9 runs.

India will now have to depend upon the result of the match today from Pakistan against New Zealand to keep their hope for the semi-final afloat.
