MIAMI (January 27, 2025) – Football icon Lionel Messi has expressed a desire to return to FC Barcelona following the expiration of his contract with Inter Miami in 2025, reports say.
Messi was said to have rejected a longer stay in Miami, telling a family friend, Yanina Latorre: “My place is there.”
Messi signed with Inter Miami in 2023 after leaving Paris Saint-Germain, where he played for two seasons before departing Barcelona due to financial problems.
Though he lifted trophies such as the Leagues Cup and Supporters’ Shield during his time in Major League Soccer, Messi’s heart belongs to the Catalan city.
Co-owner Jorge Mas of Inter Miami still hopes his club can hold on to Messi at least until 2026, when their new stadium opens.
Yet, the prospect of Messi returning to Barça has sparked palpable speculation and excitement, with fans increasingly enjoying the prospect of seeing the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner don the colors of Catalonia’s finest club again.
Messi’s return on the pitch would be a messy situation given Barcelona’s financial difficulties but an ambassadorial role would see Messi back in Blaugrana colors:
At the head of the table rather than at one of its ends. For now, his connection to Madrid remains – but at least Barcelona fans can have some hope that their hero may still return home, to close the circle of his great career.
