Muhammad Ali: The G.O.A.T.

Muhammad Ali, originally Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr., was born on January 17, 1942, in Louisville, Kentucky, and was one of the greatest boxers of all time.

Known as “The Greatest,” Ali was famous for his speed, elegant footwork, and ability to absorb a punch.

He was the first fighter to win the world heavyweight championship three times and he defended his title successfully 19 times.

In addition, Ali had a powerful voice against the Vietnam War and for civil rights, and had his own share of struggles with social justice issues.

His refusal to be drafted into the military resulted in a three-year ban from boxing during his prime years.

Notwithstanding this, he continued to be a cultural icon and symbol of resistance and pride to African Americans.

Ali finished his career with 56 wins, including 37 by knockout, and only 5 losses.

His three most historic battles were with Sonny Liston, Joe Frazier and George Foreman.

The phrase “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee,” made famous by Ali himself, summarizes his style and charm in the ring.

Ali’s legacy goes far beyond the boxing ring. He was a tireless advocate for racial justice and religious freedom, and his practice as a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War made him an icon for that generation’s counterculture.

Sports Illustrated recognized him as Sportsman of the Century in 1999, while the BBC anointed him Sports Personality of the Century.
