The Boxing Federation of India has also announced that a new foreign coach will replace the current one at the Indian boxing team after the Paris Olympics 2024.

While the expectations were quite hefty, none of the Indian boxers could win a single medal in the Games despite being groomed by the foreign coach Dmitry Dmitruk and chief coach C.A. Kuttappa.

This result has led to the BFI starting to train and develop its athletes by importing new expertise from overseas.

Youth, Junior, and Sub-Junior Training

The BFI is looking at the new foreign recruitment for the betterment of training in the youth, junior, and sub-junior categories.

The federation is too meticulous about developing the talent of the athletes, beginning at the young stage, as a good base can be built for the future.

The new coach would be the mentor for such young athletes, instilling in them the skills and techniques necessary to help them compete on the elite world stage.

The BFI has chartered well-defined expectations to the new coach, who in turn would be responsible for responding to certain defined responsibilities of performing tasks and targets.

These included practical boxing training courses for Indian coaches in the boxing academy, sharing knowledge, and upgrading the techniques and skills of both athletes and the coaching staff.

The coach will be further required to submit analyzed data on all the national campers and probables during the camps and competitions that will give necessary findings for the development of the athletes.

Recruitment Process and Requirements

The BFI has issued an advertisement calling for applications for the post of foreign coach, with the last date for receipt being August 30, 2024.

It wants a coach below 60 years. However, exceptions will be considered in extreme cases with the approval of the Indian government.

The appointed coach will receive a salary in the range of $4000 to USD 5000. However, BFI had made it clear that the compensation provided could be escalated in exceptional cases.

However, this will be subject to the approval of the Union Sports Ministry.

The job will be given under a normal four-year contract, in which they will have yearly performance reviews or as stipulated by the federation.

This way, BFI can make appropriate changes if the level of performance is not as desired for the professional boxing coach if there are any strategic changes in Indian boxing.

Challenges Faced by Indian Boxing

The shift to assigning a new foreign coach really comes at a time when Indian boxing is grappling with many issues.

Currently, the WB organization is new after replacing the IBA and is striving towards the criteria that IOC laid down for recognition.

WB has recognized BFI but is still contributing towards the IBA. The future is thus uncertain for Olympics boxing, which in turn complicates further the situation for the BFI to strive towards better performance of the players.

The Role of the New Coach

The appointment of a new foreign coach is crucial to the Boxing Federation of India’s strategy to bring about a change in the state of Indian boxing.

Through preparing young athletes, BFI wants to develop a pool of talent that can eventually represent—at the international level and even win medals for—the nation in the upcoming competitions.

It is this analysis of data, together with the feedback from the coach, that will assume high importance in pinpointing lacunae and taking remedial action in course correction of the training programs.

The adoption of such a data-driven approach will help the BFI make informed decisions about athlete development and prepare them adequately for the challenges ahead.

The BFI’s decision to get a new foreign coach has revived hopes that it will bring about a revival in Indian boxing at the world level once again.

This next generation of Indian boxers, with proper guidance and support, could achieve that elusive success that the country had not achieved at the Olympic level.
