Keith Miller: An Extraordinary All-rounder
Out of all the Australian players they say that Keith Miller is actually an all-round cricketer and one of the most valuable players in cricket since he was born in the year 1919.
His name was acclaimed as a leading cricket player, but he was also regarded as a fashion cricket player for his attractive strokes against the cricket ball as well as a poor fast bowler.
Brilliance with the Bat
Miller’s batting was defined by flair and grit, often stepping up in crucial moments.
Normally an all-rounder batted at no. 5, but versatile enough for no. 3, he crafted innings that are remembered to this day.
His knock of 145, not out against England in Sydney during the Ashes tour of 1950-51 enabled his Australian team to win by an innings and 154 runs.
On the 1954-55 Caribbean tour he revealed his class with three hundreds in six innings, thus helping Australia to take the series 3-0.
Miller’s fast bowling was just as good.
He was quick, accurate, and intelligent and often caused the best batsmen problems.
In only his second Test in Brisbane in 1946-47, he took 7 for 60 to destroy England. His bowling added to his batting, making him an asset to his team.
Miller, in 55 Tests, scored 2958 runs and took 170 wickets. In 1954, the brilliance was rewarded by a Wisden Cricketer of the Year nomination.
His last Test came against Pakistan at Karachi in 1956-57.
A Legacy Remembered
Keith Miller died in 2004 and was granted a state funeral in Melbourne.
