It is on this day that we celebrate one of the best cricketers to grace the game and more so an amazing commentator – Ian Bishop.

Popularly remembered today for his ‘remember the name’ call during the final of the 2016 ICC T20 World Cup, Bishop has been much more than that.

His accomplishments on the field as a fast bowler for the West Indies and post-playing career as one of the fiercest and most admired cricket commentators have set him up as among the highly-regarded arbiters of this game.

A Review of Ian Bishop for the Caribbean Fast Bowling Team

Before Leighton Clare Bishop entered the viewfinder of millions as a commentator, he was a formidable pace bowler of the Windies team.

Bishop was born on October 24, 1967, and made his Test debut before his 22nd birthday; nevertheless, he was one of the finest fast-bowling prospects in international cricket.

But as they say, he had a clear hint of what lay in store for him by attaining the 100 Test wickets in just his 21st match.

Some of Bishop’s career highlights include:

A year later in only his second Test match in June 1987 against India.

The veteran fast bowler established himself as the best among his famous compatriots, Marshall, Ambrose, and Courtney Walsh.

21 wickets in the series against England in 1990 to become the leading series as premier fast bowler.

6/40 in Perth in 1993 when he destroyed the Australian cricket team in the second innings.

A great series against England in 1995 when he captured 27 wickets and produced the best bowling of the series.

However, he constantly faced problems in getting into the playing field due to injuries with special reference to back problems.

Nevertheless, he benefited from a 43-test career which saw him bag 161 wickets and 118 wickets in 84 one-day internationals before he retired in 1998.

From a Fast Bowler to a legendary commentator

Ian Bishop is the best example of a player who left the field and started commenting very smoothly.

He knows cricket like the back of his palm and his composed and analytical nature means he has become one of the most revered names in the game.

Hailed by many as Cricketer of the Year in 2005, Bishop retired early from playing due to injuries but has remained influential in the commentary box as evidenced during the 2016 W C up to the final.

Today is Ian Bishop’s birthday, fans worldwide rejoice not just in his famous ‘remember the name’ scene, but in his entire career as a cricketer.

Whereas Mitchell’s timing and technique spoke volumes in his extraordinary slaughters of oppositions at the crease and on surfaces or elsewhere, Bishop charmed those as he took spectacular wickets with stunning speed and served breathtaking commentaries.
