Anantapur: Ruturaj Gaikwad’s India C beat Shreyas Iyer-led India D by four wickets in the opening match of the Duleep Trophy 2024 on Saturday, September 7.

Starting the day with their target set at 233 in 61 overs, India C’s backed up its strong batting performances till then and a series of strategic partnerships helped them to take an early lead.

four-team points table—three matches played per team—for this year’s edition of premier domestic red-ball tournament as they registered six points.

India C’s next match is against India B on September 12 in Anantapur, where captain Ruturaj Gaikwad will aim to continue their winning run.

Meanwhile, India D will face Maharashtra in Bengaluru as they look to regroup and get their first win of the tournament.

  • Sai Sudharsan and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad put together a 64-run partnership for the first wicket.
  • Rajat Patidar (44) and Aryan Juyal added 88 for the third wicket, taking India C closer to the target.

India C got away to a strong start in their run-chase with three of the top four making over 40 each. Opener Sai Sudharsan and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad gave a steady start to the chase by laying 64 runs for the first wicket.

After that, Rajat Patidar (44) and Aryan Juyal added 88 for the third wicket to take India C closer. After having lost wickets in quick succession within the space of 12 overs on Day 3—when Patidar (9), Juyal, Baba Aparajith (7), and Hrithik Shokeen (0 not out) fell off till Tea.

India C managed to retain its momentum.

An unbeaten 42-run stand between Abishek Porel (35 not out) and Manav Suthar (19 off 10 balls) finished the job, ensuring a victory by four wickets.

The bowlers of India D, headed by off-spinner Saransh Jain who scalped four wickets, tried to get back into the game but ultimately failed.

Left-arm spinner Manav Suthar also played a crucial role in the win, picking up seven wickets for 49 runs in 19.1 overs and eight scalps overall in this match to complement Jain’s brilliance with his off-spin.


India D- Scorecards of Fightback with Key Performances

India D’s Key Performances:

  • Shreyas Iyer: Scored a crucial half-century to keep India D in the game.
  • Axar Patel: Showed consistency with a 28-run knock.
  • Harshit Rana: Claimed 4 wickets in the first innings but couldn’t make a breakthrough in the second innings.

India D began their second innings at the overnight score of 206/8 but could add only 30 runs more to it before they were bowled out for a total of 236, which set India C a target of overhauling them by just three balls.

Axar Patel also played an important knock scoring as many as 28 runs from his brief stay in the middle (59-ball innings), after getting dismissed on duck of first ball ranker yesterday morning followed up with run-a-ball-86 he scored during Indian DCs’ first essay showcasing signs consistency with bat.

In the first innings, they had bowled out India D for 232 and then folded themselves at 168 in reply to take a slender four-run lead.

Baba Indrajith had held India C in the forefront with a key hand of 72, bringing his side within sniffing distance of their opposition’s total, earlier on day three.

In the 2nd innings, India D captain Shreyas Iyer and Devdutt Padikkal showed some resistance as they both scored half-centuries but their efforts went in vain.

While fast bowler Harshit Rana was the stand-out performer with four wickets in India D’s first innings, they lacked penetration to bowl out a determined batting performance from India C.


Future showdowns: Important matches lined up ahead

After this win, India C will take on India B as they look to continue their winning run in Anantapur from September 12. While Ruturaj Gaikwad will have to take responsibility in captaincy.

The onus of a good all-round display with both bat and ball is likely to play an important role as Maharashtra aim to leave their mark further ahead in the Duleep Trophy 2024 points table.

However, India D will look to regroup and get back on track as they face Maharashtra in Bengaluru.

The fact that they are winless despite on-song performances by heavyweights like Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel suggests just how patchy India D have been.

Yesterday’s first match of the tournament between India C and India D was a perfect case study as to what we will get in store during this year’s edition.
