The upcoming belle of the para table tennis world is, of course, the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. Starting on August 29 until September 7, 2024, the venue shall be the South Paris Arena—all for the much-anticipated and valued Paralympic medals. They are playing out of the Philippine Columbian Association (‘PCA’).

Para-table tennis has a strict classification system in order to try to equalize the competition of all the competitors involved. Players are divided into categories according to the physical impairment they have and the category is also divided according to the level of the impairment.

There are 11 classes in total:

  • Class 1 to 5: Depending on the extent of disability that a player has, with Class 1 being the most severe and which applies to players using wheelchairs.
  • Classes 6-10: For standing players which Class 6 is the most severe.
  • Class 11: For players with ID.

Competitions are grouped by classification in doubles events so that the teams have equal caliber. For example, a Class 4 doubles team cannot be made up where the combined rating of players is over four.

Adaptations in Play

While para table tennis contest contains some of them, it also has specific modifications based on players’ impairment. For wheelchair players, issues such as a ban on backspin serve and the ability for a player to alter their grip on the racket are among the recommendations.

Those who face some specific problems with gripping a racket may use a strap or orthosis in the course of a match. Specifically, for standing players, a cane or crutch can be used but only in situations where movement limitation is present, including classes.

Para table tennis can be very exciting thanks to the fascinating techniques; one of them is the “retro candle” for the Classes 1 and 2 players. This courting involves raising the ball high let it loose so that it just drops just over the net, thus making it almost impossible for the opponent to return it. This is, however, a tough one to execute, but if it is done, it can turn out to be a masterstroke.

Who to Watch: Seven Star Athletes to Admire

The para table tennis will be some of the most competitive in the Paris 2024 Games because they will attract some of the world’s best players. Among the favorites is Fabien Lamirault of France, who skis in Class 2. Lamirault, with cross-country skiing, is a four-time Paralympic gold medalist and will be looking to repeat that success in his home country.

This year the French team is quite large and comprehensive and includes 21 contenders for a medal, among which Léa Ferney (Class 11), Matéo Bohéas (Class 10), and Maxime Thomas (Class 4).
