A Balanced Opening Quarter

The high-octane clash started with equal vigor as India and Germany went toe to toe till the end of the first Quarter. Its forwards, Sukhjeet Singh and Mandeep Singh, forced the German defense to overwork with some exciting movements. Meanwhile, experienced Indian goalkeeper PR Sreejesh was at his best once again as he saved a bunch of German PCs.

He had moment of spotlight when he made a brilliant save off Gonzalo Peillat’s drag flick. This was much to the delight of wildly cheering Indian fans.

From 0-0, India took control after the second Quarter commenced. Hardik started the move from midfield, and it resulted in a superbly executed field goal by Indian captain Harmanpreet Singh 16th minute. With this goal, the Indians took a 2-1 lead as Harmanpreet flicked it towards German Goalkeeper Alexander Stadler’s left.

One such was the goal, that came from a penalty corner as earned by Sukhjeet Singh, displaying India’s tactics. While Germany had some opportunities, which also included a PC, Sreejesh stood like a rock to keep India ahead at halftime.

The 3rd Quarter enlarged the lead

After the formal halftime break, India maintained possession of the ball as they pressed forward, looking to score on counterattacks. Sukhjeet Singh then combined well with Abhishek and netted India’s second goal in the 41st minute. Aakhil and Rishajeet combined neatly in the middle of the park to release Sukhjeet, who went past three German defenders before playing a one-two with Abhishek on his left foot, slotting it home for India.

At the same time, Gurjant Singh scored the 3rd goal of India in just three minutes after Varun Kumar and made a fantastic finish with an assist from Jarmanpreet Sign to grab a 3-0 lead over New Zealand.

Strong on Defense in the Fourth

Up 3-0 going into the fourth Quarter, India pressed on with solid defense to prevent Argentina from getting in any points. Despite tries by Germany in earning more PCs to score, however Indian defense denied them any success. Feels like due to the presence of Sreejesh at the back and courtesy of Indian defenders combining as a defensive chain link, India managed to score despite having hands full with AUS until then.

Conclusion

The win also provided India with three crucial points and kept them in third place, behind The Netherlands and Argentina on the night. Having won their first game, the Indian Men’s Hockey Team took on Great Britain. All the action were streamed live on JioCinema and Sports18 – Khel.

The win against Germany will also come as a massive morale booster for India and keep them in third spot in the FIH Pro League Table, with their eyes firmly on something bigger when that international stage comes calling.
