Usman Khawaja: Australian Muslim Cricketer Journey

Usman Khawaja, Australian international cricketer (born 1986), left-handed batsman, ), representing national teams in Tests and ODIs.

Initially born on Dec. 18, 1986, in Islamabad, Pakistan, he emigrated to Australia at an early age and made his first-class debut for New South Wales in 2008.

Khawaja was the first Muslim to play Test cricket for Australia when he earned his cap in January 2011.

Khawaja has consistently been acknowledged as a technically proficient, unflappable and persevering batsman.

He has also played domestic teams like Queensland and has had stints in the County Championship in the UK, along with playing in the Indian Premier League and Pakistan Super League.

During the 2023 Ashes series in England, Khawaja proved to be Australia’s leading run-scorer, and reaffirming his value at the top of the batting order.

Speculation on Khawaja’s cricket future has emerged, too, as former Australian captain Michael Clarke has floated retirement after the Sydney Test against India in January 2025. But Khawaja has signalled he wants to keep playing, noting he is in good nick and fit.

Outside of cricket, Khawaja is studying for an MBA at Bond University and doing some foundation work, suggesting that he is already addressing life after retirement.
