T20 captain India’s squad against Bangladesh and Suryakumar Yadav gives proof of this new team that beats with a unique confidence mixed with humility.
Speaking after India first T20 win over Bangladesh in Gwalior, Yadav outlined his captaincy approach and lessons from Rohit Sharma.
These learning are from mentors and senior batsman teammate that sort to be applied now on field.
He clarified that he is very conscious about not deviating from the original game that he was playing.
“I am enjoying the new role. The coach and my teammates have made it so easy for me to lead, and I have been feeling pretty positive about this new responsibility,” he said.
But Yadav has been pretty clear that he would not let the new leadership role change his approach. “I want to keep playing the way I’ve always played and stay the same on and off the field,” he said.
Learning from Rohit Sharma’s Leadership
His experience with the Mumbai Indians for so many years, where he played under Rohit Sharma, had a lasting impression on him.
He even specified one Test match against India that was played in Kanpur, where Rohit’s strategies inspired him.
“Batting-wise, watching Rohit was like the T20 series had already started.
This is typical Rohit Sharma – focused and adaptable,” Yadav said. This made Yadav learn to lead with strategy and composure.
The lessons taken from Rohit were the on-field tactics, but what he created was positivity for the team.
“I want the players to feel free to play their game in a natural way and allow themselves to express themselves,” said Yadav, adding that he wants to put together an atmosphere where everybody feels important and motivated, a lot like Rohit as a leader.
Cooperation with Head Coach Gautam Gambhir
Yadav’s association with head coach Gautam Gambhir adds to his leadership journey. Speaking about their partnership, Yadav said he admires Gambhir’s understanding and support.
“Coach Gambhir has always backed my abilities, and even without me expressing it, he often understands my concerns.
That bond is truly special,” Yadav said. This support has enabled him to lead confidently, knowing he has Gambhir’s guidance at his side.
He also appreciates players who play multi-roles, for example, batters who are willing to take the ball and bowl whenever the team feels that their involvement is required with the bat.
“The sight of a batter contributing through the ball strengthens the unit further.
A day where a player cannot play to his potential with the bat can be well-compensated by playing to his best on the field, thus strengthening our bond as a unit,” he explained. It shows that Yadav believes in a team that can play with dedication and multi-role play.
