In a major setback, Australia’s preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 have been hit as skipper Pat Cummins is “heavily unlikely to play” in the tournament due to an ankle injury.
The news is a major blow to the team, which is still reeling from losing key players.
Cummins, an immense presence for Australia with bat and bandage, has been unable to take so much as a single ball.
Australian coach Andrew McDonald said Cummins was not expected to recover ahead of the tournament, which begins on Feb. 193.

“Pat Cummins has not bowled since then, and so is hugely unlikely, and therefore it means we need a captain,” McDonald said on SEN.
Cummins being out leaves Australia looking for a new captain. Travis Head and Steve Smith are the leading candidates for the position and have already been in talks with the team management to take up the duties of the leadership.
“Steve has performed really well here in the [first] Test match. He’s done some good work along the journey in one-day international cricket, too. So it’s between those two,” McDonald continued.
The absence of Cummins, along with the potential unavailability of senior pacer Josh Hazlewood, who is also nursing an injury, augurs to be a major headache for Australia.
Uncapped all-rounder Mitch Owen and pace options Sean Abbott and Spencer Johnson are amongst the contenders4 to replace the pair, while the team is exploring replacements for the pair.
Squad: Alex Carey, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne, Matthew Short, Steven Smith, Aaron Hardie, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Nathan Ellis, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa. The team will hope to qualify for the knockout stages of the eight-team contest, in Group B with Afghanistan, England and South Africa4.
Australia had recently achieved success under Cummins’ captaincy in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup as well and had also lifted the 2021–23 ICC World Test Championship title as well and hence, his absence will definitely have a significant impact on the team.
Cummins and Hazlewood replacement Hopefully the management of the team will perform the replacements and fill the spaces left by both players.
