India Supercharges with Unbeaten Opening Partnership

Australia bowled out for 104 in their first innings, the day belonged to India on Day 2 of the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test being played at Optus Stadium in Perth.

Going into the sunset at 172/0, the Indians headed into it leading by 218 runs, which was further solidified by KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal’s unbeaten opening stand of 172.

Resuming at 76/7, Australia had a long way to go.

Tethered together by Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, to the tune of 28, for the ninth wicket, however, they could not prevent them from being bowled out for 104.

Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah were the new stars with the ball, sharing seven wickets between them.

Strong Start by India

KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal definitely asserted themselves by looking unflappable in the face of that 46-run lead.

Rahul was proper in his strikes and patience to reach his half-century, while Jaiswal’s aggressive approach meant a bit of flair to this innings for him as he equaled the record for most sixes in a calendar year in Tests with a towering six off Nathan Lyon during his scintillating knock.

Day’s Key Moments

  • Historic Alliance: India registered their first 100-run opening stand in Australia since 2004, being a vindication of the duo’s endurance and class.
  • Jaiswal Milestone: Yashasvi Jaiswal has added another feather to his extraordinary calendar year as he equaled the record for most sixes by a player in the Test calendar year.
  • Australia’s Disappointment: Informed attempts by their pace attack lead of Cummins and Hazlewood proved futile as the Aussies could not quite unlock the partnership due to fielding lapses.

Session Highlights

●       Morning Session:

The Australians folded early, scoring just 28 runs in the session. Starc’s rearguard resistance with the bat was the only redeeming factor for the hosts.

●       Afternoon Session

India took its time to settle in, and Rahul and Jaiswal laid the foundation well. Streaky edges and elegant drives from Jaiswal characterized the session as India reached 84/0 by tea.

●       Evening Session

Post-tea, the pair continued with the movement, where Jaiswal went literally dominating the spin and Cummins used the pace to fish for the outside edge of the bat in vain. The lead for India was growing steadily, and the day was headed for a comfortable end.
