Morne Morkel — A Wealth of Experience

Morne Morkel’s career as a fast bowler for South Africa is nothing short of exceptional. He played in:

  • 86 Test matches (309 wickets)
  • 117 ODIs (188 wickets)
  • 44 T20Is (47 wickets)

Fast derby Morne Morkel’s vocation with South Africa seems to be nothing short of spectacular. Morel represented South Africa in 86 Test matches as well as 117 One Day Internationals ODI and 44 Twenty20 internationals, taking 309, 188, and 47 wickets, respectively.

With a height from the bespikes to scary batsmen, and more than provides aggressive bowling pace of the time. Morkel combined with South African greats Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander to create one of the most lethal modern-day bowling attacks that occasionally led to firing out opposition batting units for meager totals.

Morkel made his mark in county cricket after his retirement from international cricket in 2018, before moving into coaching.

He was appointed in his first really big international coaching position as bowling coach with Pakistan cricket team, where he helped blossom talents like Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah.

Pakistan were poor at the 2023 ODI World Cup, but Morkel was still held in high regard for his part in moulding their fast-bowling stocks.

Already he has coached across a number of teams and has learnt to adapt to various conditions, making him an ideal candidate for the Indian setup which is still an elite team on paper and would never want that image to be tarnished.

Morkel will find the integration into the Indian coaching setup rather simple due to his strong rapport with Head Coach Gautam Gambhir.

The both have a past from their time at Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where Morkel played three seasons under Gambhir’s captaincy.

More recently, the duo were together at the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), where Morkel was the bowling coach and Gambhir the team’s mentor.

The pair’s bonhomie and deep knowledge of each other’s cricketing thoughts will only be good for India as its bowlers gear up for sterner tests ahead.

Morkel will have an experienced support staff in place when he joins the team that includes assistant coaches Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate as well as fielding coach, T Dilip.

None of Nayar, Dilip or ten Doeschate were part of India’s support staff on the recent tour of Sri Lanka — Morkel had conversations ongoing and family commitments in Australia which took precedence over his potential involvement.

Former Indian cricketer Sairaj Bahutule was the interim bowling coach for that series under head coach — NCA Bowling Coach– at the time.

Morkel is taking over from ex-Indian pacer Paras Mhambrey, who had a decent stint under Rahul Dravid. And it ended with the success in T20 World Cup for India on June 2024, which was his contract expiry.

Morne Morkel will be the new Indian bowling coach and the South African is all set to take charge soon but he has some key assignments ahead of him.

The first challenge for Mornet Morne Morkel as he gets into his new role in India would be when Bangladesh visit them next month.

Two Tests followed by three T20Is are part of this encounter, with the bigger challenge coming in July against Sri Lanka. Later will begin a three-Test series against New Zealand.

But the real test of Morke’s coaching acumen will be when India tour Australia in December 2024. Certainly, India won their last two Test series’ in Oz — with back-to-back Border-Gavaskar Trophy victories.

The side will now set eyes on new history, when Morkel could play a key role in conditioned a tough Indian bowling arsenal for their record hat-trick of series wins Down Under.

An overall boost to the Indian Side

Players like Morkel, with experience and long-term ties to the Indian team will also be crucial at least from now up until the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.

India, who will try to win the coveted trophy outside their home after 32 years, will benefit immensely from the experience that he has gained while playing in South African conditions.

Morkel leading their bowling department, India are a team that already boast of several successes in white and coloured clothing, and now they would like to lock in the speed-spin permutations further.

Morne Morkel has got very big shoes to fill in his new position and the fans would be expecting him to deliver from ball one.

There are enough proofs as an iconic player and talented coach in the past that the Indian team will get a resourceful showcases with this candidate.

With his experience, tactical acumen and a rapport with the core members of the India coaching staff, Morkel is poised to shape Indian cricket going forward.
