After being disqualified in the Paris Olympics, Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat came back to India in the funeral cart, but people welcomed her with open arms. It took quite some time for her to make a comeback; this article details and also the reception as well as her decision to retire.

Bajrang Punia shed some light on the importance of the welcome, adding, “She is being welcomed like a champion. The country saw Vinesh’s journey from the streets to the podium.” Thank you, all countrymen.” 

Vinesh also has the support of Sakshi Malik, She thanked her for her efforts for women’s wrestling and the country. Sakshi said, “What Vinesh has done for all the women and the nation is commendable. I just hope the people will continue to respect her. For us, she is an Olympic champion.”

Disqualification at Paris Olympics

The first Indians women wrestler to reach an Olympics final was Vinesh Phogat. However, she was disqualified from the final 50 kg gold medal about because she weighed a hundred grams over the weight limit. CAS rejected her plea for a joint silver medal on Wednesday and this saw her dumped out of the competition. The next day, Vinesh made it official and said that she would no longer be wrestling.

Retirement Announcement

After the arrival of the Tokyo Olympics, in a press interview on August 8, 2024, Vinesh Phogat bid adieu to wrestling. In an emotionally filled post, she posted how she feels like giving up and being tired. “Maa, kushti won against me, I lost…Forgive me; our dream and my courage have been broken…I don’t have any strength now…Goodbye Wrestling 2001-2024…Always will be thankful to all of you for forgiveness,” she posted.

The people expected Vinesh back at home and the reception was largely positive. A huge number of people thronged the airport and many of his fans cheered him on social platforms.
