Badminton championships are some of the most exciting spectacles that one can get to watch across the world in rent, speed, and power display. The BWF World Championships is the most esteemed event in badminton and the top players come forth in different categories to win the much sought-after title of World Champion. Since this tournament was started in 1977 it has grown to be one of the pillars of this sport. It has evolved to be the premier playing ground for badminton.

The 2024 BWF World Championships is expected to be entailing and it will be held in China, which has a great heritage in badminton.

Brief History

The BWF World Junior Championships first debuted in Jakarta as an individual championships  badminton tournament and quickly established itself as an elite world youth event.

Justian Suhandinata, BWF Honorary Life Vice President, was instrumental in initiating the World Junior Championships. In the mid-1980s, he organized the Jakarta Open Junior Championships, which attracted many of the best junior players worldwide and secured sponsorships; this event served as a precursor for what later became the World Junior Championships.

Legacy of Excellence

Over the course of the years, the BWF World Championships has attributed itself as the premier of all badminton events where the elite teams in the sport convene. The Biennial became an annual event in 2003, except for that year’s Summer Olympics and two other years.

This change was quite useful in the fact it reasserted the tournament as a tried-and-true fixture of badminton events.

The BWF World Championships consists of a total of five events:

  • the men’s singles,
  • the women’s singles,
  • the men’s doubles,
  • the women’s doubles and
  • the mixed doubles.

Eye Level Cups

Individual events within the Championship were initially known as Bimantara Cups after their original corporate sponsor; this name continued through 2010.

At the 2011 edition of the BWF World Junior championship, five individual trophies known as Eye-Level Cups were created and given away as individual trophies.

Daekyo, a Korean educational service provider, sponsored an annual junior tournament through 2020 as a part of their support. Dr. Kang Young Joong – former BWF President (2005 – 2013) and Chairman of Daekyo – provided a total cash pool of USD36,000 that will be dispersed among each year’s winners of each individual championship event as scholarships from Daekyo.
